Over processed hair is exactly like it sounds: hair that has been damaged by excessive
heating (blow drying, straightening, curling) or excessive coloring and bleaching.
People who have ‘treated’ their hair too much are most susceptible to hair damage.
Fortunately, you can prevent your hair from further damage and restore it to its
lovely, luscious self.
Treating Overprocessed hair
• Take a break from styling and
colouring, blowdrying straightening, curling or styling for a while, till your hair
is back to its original self.
• If you have split ends, go for a trim to get rid
of all of them. This is an important start and will help you get back on track quicker.
• Give your hair a deep conditioning or hot oil treatment as often as possible.
• Massage your scalp thoroughly with some warm coconut oil every night before you
wash your hair. This will strengthen your brittle hair and over time you will see
the shine return to it.
• Use a
shampoo and conditioner, specially formulated for
damaged hair. Also, wash your hair with lukewarm water as hot water tends to damage
the cuticles and results in over processed hair falling out.
• Don't brush your
hair too often. Use a wide-toothed comb for your hair twice a day and keep it tied
with a cotton scrunchy to avoid further breakage or damage. Also, never brush your
hair when it is wet as it will only break more easily.
• Keep your hair covered
when out in the sun, or when traveling on a motorcycle or an open air car or bus.
Exposure of the hair to heavy sunlight or strong breeze also weakens it.
• Leave-in
conditioners are good products used to keep the hair under control, but if you don't
want to use more heavy chemicals in your hair, use a natural alternative instead.
• If you’re looking at natural hair care, you can mix egg yolk with a tablespoon
of plain yogurt, and apply it to the hair. Let it remain for about an hour before
you wash it off with your shampoo. Try this method at least twice a week for best
results.
Remember, you are your own
hair care expert, and you know what you can
do to treat over processed hair. Keep it simple, moderate, and you are good to go.
